Help Preserve History and Strengthen Community

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Friends-Stewards of African American Museum and Library at Oakland relies on dedicated volunteers who share a passion for preserving history, supporting educational programs, engaging the community, and helping create meaningful experiences for visitors of all ages.


Whether you have professional expertise to share, enjoy working behind the scenes, or simply want to become more involved in your community, there is a place for you at Friends-Stewards of African American Museum and Library at Oakland.

Current Volunteer Needs

At this time, Friends-Stewards of African American Museum and Library at Oakland is particularly seeking volunteers to assist with:

Communications Team

  • Social Media Marketing
  • Instagram and Facebook Page Administration
  • Contributing Monthly Newsletter Writers
  • Graphic Designers to Create Promotional Fliers for Programs & Events

Development Team 

  • Fundraising Event Development
  • Major Donor Partnerships
  • Grant research
  • Grant Writing

Education Team 

  • Relationship Development with Community Organizations and Schools
  • Program Development with Leadership Team
  • Program Implementation with Leadership Team

Event Services Team

  • Greeting Guests
  • Event Registration Assistance
  • Event Set-up Assistance
  • Event Break-down Assistance
  • Vender Assistance (as necessary)

Student Interns Coordination Team

  • Work with the Leadership Team to Educate Our High School Student Interns on Wednesdays from 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM (October - May every school year)

Oral History Support Team

  •  Materials/Background research: Newspaper Articles and Images
  • Digitizing Video & Photos
  • Assist with Recording and Photographer

Volunteer Coordination Team

  • Monitor and Document Service Hours
  • Volunteer to Work During Beautification Days at AAMLO
